There’s no more auspicious way to start Lunar New Year celebrations than with an evening at the Happy Valley racecourse! Happy Wednesday promises a fun and fortuitous start to the city’s new year festivities with Blossom Nights on every Happy Valley night race between January 17 to February 21, 2024.
Guests are invited to kickstart the new year with a series of vibrant and rejuvenating events that still honour local tradition and culture, while adding an extra dose of fun and frivolity. A stellar line-up of entertainment, alongside stunning new year-themed decorations and displays, food and games, ensures unforgettable memories for your loved ones, family, and friends this January and February.
Forget traditional flower markets - the racecourse will come alive with colourful cherry blossom displays, which signify a prosperous start to the new year, while representing new beginnings and longevity. Both old and new Hong Kong are represented with other visual elements including lucky gold coins, red lanterns and electrifying neon lights.
A series of top-notch live performers and bands are also scheduled to play at each event. Other performances will pay tribute to classic Chinese traditions albeit with a fun, modern spin. The traditional lion dance – a popular Chinese New Year custom said to bring good fortune for the new year – will light up the racecourse thanks to the clever addition of sparkling LED lights. Talented ribbon dancers will also recreate the magic of the lion dance by using long colourful ribbons that mimic the animal’s sharp, rhythmic movements. Rounding off this series of lucky performances is a classic red fan dance which has been transformed into a thrilling masterpiece complete with cool new choreography and an upbeat electronic soundtrack.
Spin the lucky windmills at the racecourse to bring you wealth and good luck in Year of Dragon. It’s adorned with auspicious symbols and sayings that will stay with you long after your head home. A Game Master will also challenge partygoers with Lunar New Year trivia and other amusing diversions, while the God of Fortune promises to shower guests with blessings and red packets.
The revelry continues at the Beer Garden where crowds can satisfy their cravings and up their luck by indulging in traditional foods including Seafood Bean Curd Sushi, Abalone and Chicken Puff, Festival Tossed Noodles, Tangerine Panna Cotta, and Popcorn.
