The Story Behind ‘The GUV’...
Jeff Lloyd is the Guv’nor because, well, he just is. He ruled racing in Brisbane for many years before bowing out at the top of his game.
He’s also a champion jockey who’s ridden successfully around the world. Racing fans will know all about him. And they’ll know even more about his extraordinary life after reading “The Guv” by Jane Baldwin.
A certain South African jockey, when riding against him in Hong Kong, described Jeff Lloyd as “a tough old bugger who’s impossible to get past in a race”. He was tough. Probably still is.
Graduating when he did from the South African Jockey Academy would have prepared him for everything life was to throw his way.
The Guv’nor is someone who has beaten the odds, especially when many believed that a stroke had ended his riding career. But there was no taking away that will to win. He willed himself back to the sport he loved and knew so well.
This is also where and a good and strong woman- in Jeff’s case, his wife Nicola- is the best support system one can have in all aspects of life and in any career we choose.
“The Guv” is not another book about horse racing and a great jockey who’s seen it all and can separate the wheat from the chaff.
The book is more of a time capsule in the life and times of UK born Jeff Lloyd.
“The Guv” takes one through his childhood in Britain where one can only assume, he was a bit of a “teddy boy”.
We’re there riding with him through his many successes, the ups and downs of racing including facing death in the eye and refusing to blink.
There’s also the importance of family to remind one about the priorities in life and how everything else is just that- everything and nothing else.
Personally speaking, “The Guv” is a book that is also a short-form documentary waiting to be produced. There’s a strong visual element to the narrative.
The story is compelling and something that won’t be out of place somewhere like the Sundance Film Festival.
Maybe there won’t be the need to wait that long for this documentary to happen...
